Things to do during your stay
You may want to simply relax and enjoy the comfort and surroundings of your Lodge – and who could blame you?! But if you’re looking to explore the local area, here are a few of our favourite suggestions…
Local walks & cycle routes – click here
- and do let us know if you enjoy any other routes you think we should add!
Local towns, markets, castles…
- Whalley Abbey, Whalley – explore the ruins and (last time we went) enjoy a cuppa too
- Sawley Abbey, Sawley – almost opposite the Spread Eagle pub, a gentle place to see another ruin, this one from the 1100’s
- Clitheroe – market days are Tuesday and Saturday – and otherwise you can enjoy plenty of restaurants and bars, independent shops (and charity shops too!) as well as the (very tiny) Castle and grounds (free to visit). You’ll find a selection of supermarkets here from Aldi to Booths for all your self-catering goodies too.
- Skipton – similar to Clitheroe, albeit a larger town and also with it’s own (much larger!) castle.
- Whalley Artisan Monthly Market – usually last weekend of the month – at the time of writing I can’t confirm the next dates but do keep an eye out for signs!
Garden centres:
- Holden Clough is just over a mile away by road (or see above map to walk there avoiding the rural lane) – this local nursery has been evolving beautifully for years and it’s a firm favourite for us, for plants and for coffee & a cake too. Cafe, interior shop & garden equipment. Pricey, but worth it! https://holdencloughnursery.com/
- Shackletons in Chatburn – 10 min drive – regular garden centre with cafe, gifts and a furniture / interiors shop. https://www.shackletonsonline.co.uk/
- Newlands Garden Centre, Chatburn – a proper nursery, no frills, opens seasonally. https://www.facebook.com/newlandsnurserychatburn/
And a few other ideas:
- Cookery classes – Dale Head Farm – lots of one day options for something a little different!
- Everyman Cinema in Clitheroe: we love it for it’s laid back atmosphere, amazing burgers and a glass of wine on a real sofa while you enjoy your film.
- Coach House Beauty in Bolton by Bowland (3 miles) for nails, facials and other lovely treats
- Woodland Spa near Burnley (30 mins) – we love this spa for a full day hang-out, enjoying the outdoor pool, tapas and cocktail bar as well as the usual steam rooms, sauna and indoor bubbly pools.
- Duck Pin Bowling at Holmes Mill, Clitheroe – brand new and looks great fun; just next to the Beer Hall and Food Hall.
